The Institute for Aging Research, Hebrew SeniorLife, Boston, MA, USA

A live 20 minute online presentation, complete with PowerPoint slides:

    • There is a theoretical risk that bisphosphonates would impair fracture healing. What do the animal studies tell us?
    • What is the optimal time to start postoperative bisphosphonates?
    • Many studies have documented undertreatment of osteoporosis after hip fracture. What is a useful approach to getting treatment to patients?
    • How do interventions to prevent falls figure into one's approach to a patient with a hip fracture?
    • Case series have reported femoral shaft fractures in bisphosphonate-treated patients with low bone turnover; the overall risk appears to be very low. Were such fractures seen in the Horizon study? Is the risk of such fractures increased in the post-fracture setting? Can we identify a subset of patients at increased risk of complications?
    • How should we approach vitamin D therapy for fall prevention and fracture protection post hip fracture?
    • The data on fracture protection by hip protectors are decidedly mixed. How can we get to an answer regarding their role in high-risk patients?
